Salad days.

Its the middle of Winter.....................
Its cold, wet and miserable outside.................

All I want is hot comfort food, soup, chicken pie, banana muffins, coffee and hot chocolate.................

But guess what i still have some salad greens growing in the plot.

A quick dash to the plot between the showers and downpours...........

Oak leaf and Cos lettuce .....................

Young rocket leaves ........growing under the cold frame.

Just perfect with ham and spicy pumpkin relish in rolls for lunch.

With the longer days and plenty of rain I've noticed little lettuce seedlings popping up everywhere so the cycle continues.....................

  1. My lettuces are doing really well at the moment too - and do you know I do quite enjoying pretending the weather is lovely while I tuck into my latest leaf concoction.

  2. I've just sown some rocket ready for our winter too - even though it seems ages away! One of the best leaves for pepping up the winter gloom :)

Thanks for joining in again this month!

  3. Oh I miss lettuce, I let my supply dwindle too much and then my next batch of seedlings got toddlered! I have spotted a couple of volunteer lettuce coming up though and I just planted some more seeds to go out in a month or so. Hopefully the gap will close soon in the lettuce supply chain, yours looks so good.

    1. Ah yes toddlers can be ever so helpful in the garden, I'm sure your seeds will be up in no time, only 1 more month of winter ! Yepee !!!

  4. We're dining on lots of salad meals in the evenings but I am embarrassed to say that none are from my garden! Between the slugs and grasshoppers, I gave up on growing greens until my husband can build me a proper cold frame that I transport to anyplace I like in the garden. Sending you some italian sunshine your way!

  6. We've got lots of lettuce growing here too. All of the green leafy vegetables having been doing well over winter with all of the rain. I do like the sound of that relish with ham on a roll:) I hope that you've been getting some sunshine there where you are:)

  7. What with all my lettuce having been eaten by the slugs this year - I know, sloppy of me, I should have sown them in slug collars - I was happy to find that some of my winter standby, corn salad/lambs' lettuce, had come up here and there in midsummer. I sowed this once, about twenty years ago, and it has helped me through the winter ever since, coming up all over the place. Keep them coming little lambs!
