Harvest Monday

Today was a lovely sunny day (finally) perfect for weeding and digging over the garden beds, garlic, red onions and leeks are all are coming along well.
I found a healthy little crop of beetroot seedlings under some weeds(well it has been cold and wet and not really weeding weather) who would of thought they would survive the frost............

Ok so what have I been harvesting over the last week...........
Cabbage, bunching onions, silver beet, lettuce, rocket, parsley and a few spinach leaves.

I'm not quite sure what happened to my Italian cabbage, it didn't develop a head just loose leaves but their certainly tasty, sweet and tender and I have been lightly steaming them (stalks too) or frying them in a little olive oil.
                                              
                                                              

Goodness me the Girls layed 46 eggs this week !!!!! I think I may have to set up a stall at the front gate............

                                                      

I've been keeping a close watch on my broccoli Romanesco and can't decide weather I should pick it or not. This is the first time I've grown this variety and I thought it was lime green in color but it is now changing to purple.....
Has anyone else grown this type before? 

Tonight's quick dinner for one, assorted greens chopped and cooked in a slurp of olive oil and cumin and then tossed with last nights left over rice , feta cheese and black pepper..........

  1. I have left my romanesco go too long and its all atarting to separate out into very individual florets. Having said that it didn't look like it was ready before but I suspect I didn't know what I was looking for....I am growing a different type - yours looks really interesting.

    1. They are pretty happy even though we have had the wettest of winters and hardly any sunshine, I'm sure they know its only 17 days to spring !!! yepeee....

  3. Hey Andrea, always interesting to see what's growing in your garden.......
    My goodness your girls have been productive. You must have quite a few chooks!!
    Ours are starting to get back into the swing of things slowly, but we only have 3 girls so I certainly won't be setting up a stall, hehe....

    Harvested our first lot of Spinach on the weekend, not going to feed a family but enough for us.
    Sorry, I can't help with your broccoli question, but it does look interesting.

    1. Hi Claire, I think the girls are enjoying the new feed I've added to their diet, lovely fat wheat from a local farmer and a mixed grain which is ground into smaller pieces which they love and no waste.
      We have 6 young hens about 12 months old and 1 aged lady(hubby has lots of my old chook jokes) who keeps the girls in line.

      Lucky i got in the garden yesterday, rain and hail today !

  4. Your romanesco is turning purple? Well that's the first time I've heard of that. I initially thought it was purple cauliflower which is something that I'm going to try again this year (overwintering for a spring crop). I've got seedlings that will be potted up and placed into the cold frame once fall arrives.

    I love hearing about your Girls laying more eggs. Almost 4 dozen eggs...wow!

    1. Well it does look a bit like cauliflower and I did buy them as seedlings from the nursery so i suppose the label might of been wrong?? Going to pick some for tonight's dinner so i will soon know.

  6. perhaps the purple color is from too much sun on the head? I would just pick it before the curds start to separate and enlarge into flowers.

    1. Well we haven't had much sun at all but we have had a couple of frosts, I do put frost covers on them at night but maybe they have been slightly frozen.

  7. 46 eggs is a lot of eggs! We're getting tons, too and really need to figure out what to do with all of them! It's pretty crazy how they all add up :-) Great harvests this week!

    1. Yes its a lot of eggs..... I must admit my friends are very welcoming when I drop in for a cuppa a bring along a dozen eggs.
      Thought I'd use some up making lemon butter.......
      Have also been making mini quiches upon request for his lordship, seems they are the perfect breakfast...........

    1. Hi Barbie, yes the fridge is looking very full of egg cartons!! today's menu, eggs for breakfast, orange and almond muffins(2eggs) for snacks, maybe quiche for dinner!!

  10. I've had romanesco do that to me before, it's not normal, but it should still taste ok. You should probably harvest it, it won't turn green and spiral shaped, it will start to bloom. I don't know what makes it do that.

  11. Great looking harvest this week. 46 eggs! Wow! Our hens are starting to molt so our egg production has dropped way back. We are only getting 3 a day most days now and I have to admit it has been nice to only have a couple dozen eggs in the fridge instead of the 4 or 5 dozen we had for a while. We were getting pretty creative with the egg recipes for a while.
